I was wanting everyone's opinion on regularly performing clutch-less shift on our bikes if it is safe. I used to own a Vmax 1200 and on the manual it specifically said not to clutch-less shift since the gearbox is not designed to handle that much stress. I have looked everywhere on the owners manual and I don't think it mentions it.

as a rule clutch-less upshifts are better than clutch-less downshifts on the gearbox! but for me i would not recommend it as it i would imagine will effect your gear box over time.. what about this quickshifter.. www.healtech-electronics.com/products/qse/

Suzuki has been putting dog tooth transmissions in their bikes forever. I upshift my 76 gs without a clutch every time I ride it. You always use it to down shift.
While you up shift, you release the throttle. This takes the pressure off of the dogs. At this moment, the dogs are in a state of lost motion. They can freely move in and out from each other.
While off of the throttle, the engine drops in rpm. During this the crankshaft and trans input shaft will catch up to each other. That's when you upshift.
The gears in our trans is a close ratio trans. Perfectly built to shift without the clutch.
Shifting down is a totally different story. The reason you use the clutch to down shift, is to take the load off of the dogs while shifting to a lower gear. The clutch then brings the engine up to speed to match the trans input shaft.
If you down shift without a clutch, you can potentially destroy the trans, let alone the shock itself will break your rear tire loose and you will lose control.
The same goes for any dog box trans in a race car. No clutch up, always clutch down. So this whole thing works on the ability and timing of the operator.
A quick shifter essentially kills your ignition in the blink of an eye. This does the same thing as you releasing the throttle. Don't waste your money. You can see the same function as a quick shifter in a boat direction controller. A boat uses two switches to kill the ignition while going from forward to reverse. This releases the dogs into this lost motion range, allowing it to shift.

I thought that was how the quick shifter work. its the same thing just way faster. I never felt as smooth of a trans than the gsx s750 I wanted to make sure its not totally crazy to do specially being my first brand new bike. Thank you ashesofanother! You are just filled with amazing info!

Been a gear head my entire life. It's my career and hobby. Suzuki transmissions are beautifully built.
