Ok I promised a review of the shad seat I ordered from Amazon UK. I'm at work so I cant post any pictures so I'll have to add those later.
First the stock seat: With the stock seat I was good for about 90 minutes before I started feeling discomfort. After that I was squirming a bit for the next few hours. At the 4 hour mark things were really uncomfortable. Now within that first 4 hours I had to get off the bike 3 times, twice to give my rump a break and once to refuel. From hours 4 to 6 I had to get off the bike two more times, once for a break and once for fuel. From hours 6 to 8 I had to get off again and spent those 2 hours switching butt cheeks and standing on the pegs occasionally. By the end of the day I was chapped and I paid for it the next few days. I think bicycle shorts and more long distance conditioning would've helped with the stock seat a little but overall I don't think it would've helped a ton.
The shad seat: The shad seat was comfortable as soon as I sat on it. Its really soft and pillow like. It almost felt too soft and I was worried that would be a problem. At the 90 minute mark I again started to feel like I had been sitting on a seat for awhile. The difference is that feeling never turned into discomfort during that first 4 hours. I only got off the bike once at the 3 hour mark and that was just to refuel. Got to my first destination at the 4 hour mark. Had breakfast and hung out chatting with a friend for about an hour. Saddled up and headed out for the next 4 hours. From 4 to 6 hours I started to feel a little discomfort. From hour 6 to 8 it got a little worse but not much worse at all. As a matter of fact I never got the feelin like "I need off this seat now" like I did with the stock seat. I only got off the seat 3 times total the whole day. Twice to refuel and once for breakfast.
I think with a little more conditioning and maybe some bicycle shorts I could ride even longer. I have bicycle shorts but I didn't use them this ride because I wanted an apples to apples comparison between the stock and the Shad seat. Overall I'm happy with the purchase and I would recommend it to anyone who rides more than 4 hours at a time and finds the stock seat a pain in the ass
For reference I'm 6'3" tall and I weigh 215lbs. Some of you lighter riders might like the Shad seat even more.
